U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents searched James Oxley’s iPhone 13 after he returned to Tampa on Dec. 22 from Mexico on the Margaritaville at Sea’s Islander.

According to Homeland Security Investigations, some of the children depicted in the images of sexual abuse appeared to be younger than 12 years old.

Oxley, 52, of Polk City, was indicted with the transportation and possession of child sex abuse material and possession of obscene visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct generated by AI.

If convicted, Oxley faces a maximum penalty of 40 years in federal prison for transporting child sex abuse material and up to 20 years in prison for possession and AI offenses.

Last year, the FBI warned that child sexual abuse material created with content manipulation technologies, including generative AI, is illegal.
