FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An investigation remains ongoing after a Fort Lauderdale police officer shot and killed a man over the weekend.

It happened at a Chevron gas station off Davie Road.

It was Sunday shortly after 3 p.m. when surveillance video captured the driver of a silver Mercedes SUV pull up to a gas pump along the 3100 block of Davie Boulevard.

As the driver opened the door, an unmarked black sedan pulled up behind it.

Once that happened, the driver of the Mercedes pulled forward. The black car followed behind and then another vehicle closed in on the Mercedes and officers are seen getting out of both cars.

Moments later, gunfire rang out.

“I heard about eight to nine rounds go off,” said Shawn Bell, who lives in the area.

Authorities said the suspect, who has yet to be identified by police, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

Surveillance video from across the street showed the large police response following the shooting.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz said it began about a mile and a half away, when one of his officers tried to pull over the driver of the Mercedes along the 100 block of Southwest 27th Avenue just south of Broward Boulevard and later located him at the gas station.

“Preliminary investigation reveals the driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm,” said Schultz.

Following the shooting, officers blocked off a portion of Davie Boulevard and spent hours investigating.

Shell casings were seen littering the ground and Local 10′s cameras spotted more than a dozen evidence markers, some of which surrounded the Mercedes before it was towed away.

So far, there’s no word on why officers were trying to pull over the suspect in the first place.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
