DAVIE, Fla. – A man has died following a police-involved shooting Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, authorities confirmed.
It happened in the parking lot of a Chevron gas station near the intersection of Davie Boulevard and Southwest 31st Avenue.
According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the shooting occurred just after 3 p.m.
Police said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 100 block of Southwest 27th Avenue before ultimately finding the driver at the Chevron.
Surveillance video shows the moments leading up to the shooting in which one officer opened fire on the man.
“(The) preliminary investigation reveals the driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm,” Police Chief Bill Schultz said.
One witness told Local 10 News that the suspect tried to run away.
“I was taking things out of the house, then I heard around about eight to nine rounds go off, then all of a sudden five minutes later, you heard a bunch of police sirens,” witness Shawn Bell said.
Police confirmed that the suspect was shot by one of the officers seen in the video.
He was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.
For hours, officers blocked off a portion of West Davie Boulevard. Local 10 cameras were rolling as detectives scoured the crime scene. Bullets littered the ground, and upwards of 10 evidence markers were scattered about, some of which surrounded the suspect’s Mercedes-Benz.
That vehicle was eventually towed away.
Authorities said no officers were injured in the shooting.
Police confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, per standard protocol.
