FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are investigating after they said a man died in an apparent drowning in Fort Lauderdale’s New River early Saturday morning.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, officers responded to a call around 2:40 a.m. near Las Olas Boulevard and the Wharf after reports of a man in the water calling for help.
A FLPD spokesperson confirmed that several witnesses saw the man struggling, including a good Samaritan who jumped in to attempt a rescue.
However, the rescuer lost sight of the man before he disappeared beneath the surface and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators.
Divers concluded their search and rescue efforts around 5:30 a.m., recovering a body believed to be that of the man reported earlier.
Authorities said a medical examiner’s office in Broward County is working to confirm the man’s identity and determine how he ended up in the water.
No other details were immediately released.
