Fire crews rush to extinguish blaze at Fort Lauderdale condo building

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ A fire erupted at a Fort Lauderdale condo building on Tuesday.

It happened at a building located along the 600 block of Tennis Club Drive.

Authorities said the fire started around 7:30 p.m. and was contained to a storage space above an elevator shaft in the four-story building.

Due to the containment, most units did not suffer any smoke, water or fire damage.

Residents said they noticed the fire coming from the fourth floor and said they first tried to put out flames using their own with fire extinguishers, but the fire only got bigger.

Thatā€™s when some people started knocking on the doors of neighbors to tell them to get out.

Residents said the buildingā€™s fire alarms did go off.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said the department heard that from multiple people and is looking into why the fire alarms failed.

It is expected that most, if not all residents will be allowed back inside their homes sometime Tuesday evening.

In total, authorities said 24 units were evacuated.

No injuries were reported.
