MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said multiple reports have been filed in the past week about scammers impersonating jail or law enforcement officials.

He said the fraudsters often claim victims missed jury duty or are involved in a criminal case, real or fabricated, to coerce payment.

Authorities also confirmed that “a sure sign of a scam is anyone asking for payment for anything via gift cards or Bitcoin.”

Linhardt advised that if someone contacts you requesting money while claiming to be from law enforcement, a government organization, a utility company, or even a financial institution, you should hang up and contact the organization directly.

Additionally, Linhardt warned against sending money in response to distressing messages from family members or friends unless you verify the request with the individual directly.

He also urged the public to always save any texts, emails, or other communications and report them immediately to law enforcement.

Residents can file reports or seek assistance by visiting the MCSO’s website.
