MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The long-awaited pedestrian bridge at the entrance to South Beach is becoming a reality, according to city officials.
“Today is the day the developer mobilized to begin construction of our new iconic pedestrian bridge,” said David Gomez, director of capital improvement projects for the city of Miami Beach.
Construction activities started Monday, with the installation of temporary construction fencing along the perimeter of the project work zones. Relocation of several underground utilities on Fifth Street will follow.
It’s part of a commitment developers made to residents in exchange for building a giant condo complex on city-owned land.
The colorful bridge, designed by French artist Daniel Buren, will stand out as soon as drivers arrive to Miami Beach from the MacArthur Causeway.
The covered bridge and walkway connect the beach path and marina, above and across Fifth Street and link to the west end of the island.
The project is expected to be completed by the summer or fall of 2026.
