With just over a week until President-elect Donald Trump takes office, the focus on presidential pardons has intensified.
Among the most high-profile requests is one from supporters of Enrique Tarrio, the former Miami-based leader of the Proud Boys, who is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for his role in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
Tarrio’s attorney, Nayib Hassan, joined This Week in South Florida with Glenna Milberg on Sunday to discuss the ongoing efforts to secure clemency.
This week marked the certification of the November election, the first time since Trump supporters disrupted that process four years ago.
On the same day, an official request for a pardon for Tarrio was submitted to the president-elect. Tarrio’s case remains a focal point in the broader legal and political discourse surrounding Jan. 6 prosecutions.
Hassan emphasized the unprecedented length of Tarrio’s sentence and the impact of the legal proceedings on his client and his family.
Hassan’s appearance on TWISF underscored the ongoing legal battle for Tarrio’s freedom and highlighted the complexities surrounding the pardon process in the final days before Trump’s return to the presidency.
