FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Authorities have released body camera footage from a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred last month in Fort Lauderdale.
The video shows the moments Fort Lauderdale police officers opened fire, killing 21-year-old Jaylen Moore.
In the video, released by the department with commentary from Fort Lauderdale Police Maj. Patrick Hart, starts with 911 calls by Moore’s family, asking for police and saying Moore was in the midst of a mental health crisis and had a gun.
Those police officers arrive, eventually engaging with Moore, who emerged from the home located on Southwest 25th Avenue near Third Street with his brother and a gun.
The officers eventually open fire with a volley of shots.
Moore died while the man at his side escaped uninjured.
His grandfather spoke to Local 10 shortly after the incident, saying officers went too far.
“Shot him one time and the gun came out of his hand, and when he hit the ground they just kept shooting, and kept shooting,” said Dudley. “He said that’s what y’all are trained to do? Come on man. You’re saying y’all are just trained to kill a black man regardless, whatever the situation is.”
Police say they did share the video with Moore’s family before sharing it publicly.
The family declined to speak to Local 10 News following the video’s release.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate the shooting.
