‘Embrace it’: Chilly temps hit South Florida, locals bundle up

MIAMI – You know it’s winter in South Florida when you see people out in sweaters and shorts.

“It is cold and it’s particularly cold,” Brenda Moe said as she walked in Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood Wednesday morning. “Like, it feels cold in my bones.”

With temperatures dropping below 50 degrees this week, Local 10 News spotted some people bundling up more than that.

“Make sure that you have your jackets and your scarves and maybe even your gloves,” Moe said.

This cooldown in Florida is especially notable, considering Miami hasn’t recorded a temperature under 50 degrees in about two years.

And as temperatures drop in South Florida, so do the iguanas.

As seen in past cold fronts, when the temperature hits anywhere below 50, iguanas may start to freeze.

Local 10 News went hunting Wednesday morning and found some lethargic iguanas in the Grove.

Once the temperature starts to warm up, they start moving again.

For many, the chilly conditions are a nice reprieve.

“Embrace it,” one man said. “Cold is good for you. It’s good for your body. Just enjoy it because it’s going to be gone within a week.”
