Aviation expert weighs in on stowaway survival after bodies found on JetBlue flight at FLL

MIAMI – There are questions surrounding how a person is able to get into the wheel well of an airplane after two bodies were found in a JetBlue plane in Fort Lauderdale.

FEAM Aero gave Local 10′s Michalia Hightower an exclusive tour Tuesday of a 757 aircraft at Miami International Airport similar to the one at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in which ramp workers discovered two dead bodies in a wheel well on a flight from New York on Monday night.

“This should never happen,” said aviation attorney Willard Shepard. “The priority is security always at the airport property and clearly their security here has been breached. This should never take place. It does raise a lot of questions on how this took place.”

According to Shepard, a former fighter pilot, the chances of a stowaway surviving in the air once the wheels retract is 20%.

“You can be crushed by the landing gear coming up, you can fall out when the gear door is open,” he said. “The temperature, so it’s extremely cold and also the same thing when it comes to the oxygen.”

In a statement, a spokesperson from JetBlue called the incident “heartbreaking.”

It will be sometime before we learn the identities of the two men found. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting the autopsies.
