‘We have to stop the gun violence’: Family, friends mourn teen killed by stray bullet

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – The investigation into the shooting death of a 13-year-old Florida City boy continues.

Jahvon Taylor was a 7th grader at Homestead Middle School.

His former football and wrestling coach, Curtis Dewberry, spoke to Local 10 News’ Roy Ramos on Monday.

Dewberry said he was devastated after hearing the young teen, who he said was a stand out with the Florida City Razorbacks football team, was shot and killed Saturday night.

5 p.m. report:

“He will be missed, not just at the park, but throughout the community,” said Dewberry. “I get the call from another coach telling me, ‘You heard what happened?’ I said, ‘What happened?’”

Miami-Dade police said Taylor, along with another teen, were hit in a hail of gunfire while standing outside a home with friends near the corner of Northwest 13th Street and Sixth Avenue in Florida City.

Local 10 News spotted bullet holes in the front windows next door.

While Taylor was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries, he did not survive.

Taylor’s aunt, Jakilah Brady, said she was still in shock while urging the public to help find the shooter while at a vigil held for the teen Sunday night.

“I’m just confused, I’m in shock, I don’t believe it,” she said. “I feel like it’s all a dream, I just want him to wake up.”

Mobile billboards at the vigil displayed Taylor’s picture, asking anyone to come forward with tips and help find who fired the shots that took the life of the young boy with so much life to live.

“We have to stop the gun violence,” said Dewberry. “All I can say is put the guns up and let the kids grow to be whatever they are going to be in life.”

Authorities said the second victim is expected to survive his injuries.

Miami-Dade police said they have several people in custody who they are speaking with regarding the shooting, but no arrests have been announced as of the time of this story’s publication.
