BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Humane Society of Broward County is spotlighting adoptable pets like Gabbana, a smart and playful two-year-old dog, as it prepares for its largest fundraiser of the year.
The VCA Walk for the Animals event, set for Feb.1, aims to raise over $500,000 to support the shelter’s mission of caring for homeless and abandoned animals.
Gabbana, a 35-pound dog with a knack for tricks, stole the spotlight during a recent segment promoting the shelter.
Described as “a very cuddly, very playful, and well-trained dog,” Gabbana showed off her talents on Local 10 News, performing commands like “sit,” “high five,” and even rolling over.
“She’s just that smart,” Human Society of Broward’s Cherie Wachter said. “If you take her home, you get to tell all your friends you taught her that.”
Gabbana’s backstory reflects a common challenge for many shelter animals. Her family had to move unexpectedly and could no longer care for her. Despite the upheaval, Gabbana has proven to be a friendly, energetic dog who loves walks, meeting people, and playing with toys like balls and ropes.
“Sadly, her family had to move unexpectedly, so they gave her up,” the representative explained. “She’s used to going for a walk three times a day and hasn’t lived with other dogs, but she’s been friendly with those she’s met on walks.”
Wachter emphasized Gabbana’s potential as a family dog, particularly for active households willing to invest time and energy into keeping her engaged.
“She’s so smart and treat-motivated. There’s so much potential for her,” she added. “She could even be trained for agility or as an animal-assisted therapy dog, visiting nursing homes and hospitals.”
A Community Event for a Cause
As Gabbana awaits her forever home, the Humane Society is gearing up for its signature event, the VCA Walk for the Animals.
Held at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, the event is a celebration of animal lovers and their furry companions. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., with the one-mile walk beginning at 9 a.m.
Participants who raise $150 will receive an official event t-shirt, and even small donations can make a big difference.
“Our average donation is probably about $25, but any amount is appreciated,” Wachter said. “If I can set up a page and send it out, you can do it too because I’m not that tech-savvy.”
The walk is a day filled with camaraderie, as dog lovers and supporters gather to make a difference for animals in need. Local 10′s Jacey Birch will emcee the event, which features vendors, activities, and opportunities to meet adoptable pets like Gabbana.

Adopting Gabbana
As the Humane Society encourages the community to participate in the Walk for the Animals, it also hopes Gabbana will find her forever home soon.
“This is the kind of dog that can really melt everyone’s heart,” the shelter said. “She just needs a chance to show what an amazing companion she can be.”
