Miami-Dade sheriff-elect talks Orange Bowl security in wake of New Orleans attack

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – In just days, thousands will descend on Hard Rock Stadium for the Orange Bowl, but this year, it’s in the shadow of the horrific New Year’s attack in New Orleans.

Miami-Dade Sheriff-elect Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the department immediately re-grouped to look at the already beefed-up security plan.

“Everything we already planned, prior to (the event), we are increasing,” said Cordero-Stutz.

She says there will be more uniformed officers on site and off and more heavily armed vehicles, adding that the area will be swept earlier in the day and that they are ready to pivot depending on what happens.

On Thursday, Miami Beach police said they’re ready for pre-Orange Bowl festivities.

Also with more officers, already-in-place street barriers and new technology.

Smaller events coming up, like the King Mango Strut Parade and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade have the attention of law enforcement as well.

The county works with municipalities sometimes a year in advance to prepare for some events.
