MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A homeowner in southwest Miami-Dade sounded the alarm Friday over a temporary power fix that she says poses serious safety risks for her family and neighbors.
Lisa Spires’ concerns date back to June 2024, when a power pole outside her home near the 19000 block of Southwest 326th Street collapsed, tearing wires from her meter box and cutting off her electricity.
While Florida Power & Light quickly replaced the pole within a day, Spires says the subsequent repair was only a temporary solution.
“The fix was temporary, and this line has been running across my yard for months,” Spires said. “It’s just not safe.”
Spires says the power line runs over her fence, across her driveway, and is tangled along the side of her yard.
She also feels the line is not only an eyesore but a potential hazard.
“It’s electricity running across my grass. It’s a live wire,” she said. “We have to move it every time we mow the yard. My dog wants to play with it, and we’ve had close calls.”
Despite multiple calls and emails to FPL over the last six months, Spires says the problem remains unresolved.
“We’ve called for the past six months, emailed — ‘oh, it’s coming, we have to get the permit, we have to get the part,”' she said.
Local 10′s Roy Ramos stated that FPL told him they had been using a temporary solution called a “ground strap,” which functions like an extension cord. However, the necessary equipment for permanent repairs were delayed.
“This just doesn’t seem to matter until something happens,” Spires said, expressing worry for the safety of her children and neighbors.
FPL confirmed the equipment needed for the permanent repairs has arrived and is now working with Spires to schedule the work.
“We understand how important it is for customers to have reliable electricity. That’s why we worked to provide safe, temporary service for this customer using what’s called a ground strap. Ground straps act like an extension cord, allowing us to continue to provide reliable service safely until permanent repairs can be made. We have been waiting on the necessary equipment to conduct permanent repairs. That equipment has arrived, and we are working with the customer to schedule the remaining work as soon as possible.”
