Even in sunny South Florida, winter storms mean frustrating holiday travel delays

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Some frustrating delays across the country were being felt in South Florida Friday, including, some cancellations as a weather system impacted travel from coast to coast.

Poor weather across the country caused travel delays Friday and the ripple effects were being felt in South Florida. Nearly 3,000 flights were delayed nationwide as of Friday evening, according to FlightAware.com.

Here in South Florida, the numbers look like this:

At Miami International, just under 290 flights have been delayed and five cancellations. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, there are just over 260 delays and one cancellation.

“You have to wait with babies,” said Adeline Kamera, who arrived Friday afternoon in Miami from Germany after facing a two-hour delay from Charlotte.

“Two hours is a long time,” Kamera added.

The delays are caused by this: In the western mountains, storms could dump 1 to 2 feet of snow and more than four inches of rain.

On the East Coast, a deluge is expected in some areas. The bad weather has stretched on for days. This video shows challenging driving conditions in Canyon, Utah, on Christmas Day. Many planes will have to fly around those weather systems.

Triple-A estimates record travel numbers this season, projecting 119 million Americans will journey more than 50 miles between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1, most by road.

But record numbers are also expected to travel by air: 7.85 million people this holiday season, which is up about 300,000 from last year.
