The incident unfolded when two people arrived at a complex near the 9600 block of South Dixie Highway in the county’s Dadeland area on Oct. 21.
As the two individuals entered the front lobby door of the complex, Miami-Dade police said two men armed with guns came up behind them.
According to an arrest report, Antwan Lawrence Brooks, 30, of Homestead, targeted one of the victims, attempting to snatch his necklace at gunpoint.
A struggle broke out, during which the second victim ran from the scene but was briefly chased by the second suspect, identified by police as Devonte Kenjuan Wilson, 20, of northwest Miami-Dade.
The first victim, who was also armed, drew his weapon and fired toward one of the assailants, the report stated.
Police say Wilson responded by opening fire, leading to a shootout between the first victim and the two suspects.
Authorities said the first victim was hit three times by gunfire, with bullets striking his chest, abdomen, and leg.
The suspects fled the scene as the first victim collapsed from his injuries while the second victim returned moments later to render aid and call 911.
Emergency responders transported the first victim to Jackson South Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injuries. Police found his personal belongings scattered across the crime scene.
Detectives canvassing the area said they obtained crucial surveillance footage from doorbell cameras that revealed that Wilson and 27-year-old Isaiah Luis Gispert were canvassing the residential area hours before the attack.
Additionally, police said surveillance footage showed a U-Haul van displaying “unusual behavior” near the scene.
Police said the van, which was identified through its license plate and rental records, was tied to Wilson’s sister.
When the van was located, investigators noted it smelled strongly of bleach and was missing its rear carpet liner, raising suspicions of evidence tampering.
Police said further video evidence linked the suspects to the crime. Wilson was later spotted wearing shoes matching those of one shooter, and Brooks was identified as a passenger in the van, according to the report.
Approximately 23 minutes after the shooting, police said both Wilson and Brooks arrived at Homestead Baptist Hospital in a black Honda Accord seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
Police noted their accounts were inconsistent, and both men refused to cooperate with investigators. Surveillance footage showed Wilson wearing the same shirt seen in earlier footage from the crime scene, the report stated.
The Honda Accord, which police confirmed was registered to an associate of Brooks, was tracked heading south on the Turnpike toward the hospital immediately after the shootout, police said.
Police later searched the vehicle, recovering red and black Nike shoes matching those worn by Brooks during the robbery attempt.
On Nov. 22, authorities said they apprehended Gispert. who is believed to have driven the U-Haul van. During the operation, multiple guns were seized, including one that ballistics testing matched to the crime scene.
Police said Wilson was arrested on Dec. 20 near the intersection of Northwest Fifth Avenue and Northwest 113th Street in Miami Shores and declined to speak with investigators without an attorney.
Authorities said Brooks was also arrested and charged with unrelated offenses before being linked to the attempted robbery and shooting.
Cellphone records provided additional evidence against the suspects, with GPS data placing them at the scene during the time of the robbery, according to the report.
Investigators believe Wilson, Brooks, and Gispert worked together to conduct surveillance, carry out the robbery, and engage in the shootout that left the first victim critically injured.
Jail records show all three suspects are facing one count each of attempted murder and armed robbery with a deadly weapon.
Brooks is being held without bond at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center, while Wilson is detained without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As of Monday, Gispert was not listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade jail website.
Local 10 News has requested Gispert’s mugshot and arrest report from the Miami-Dade Police Department.
