Fallen Charlotte County deputy grew up in Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A fallen Charlotte County deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty grew up in Miami-Dade County, Local 10 News has learned.

Originally from Cuba, Cpl. Elio Diaz came to the Miami area at the age of 9.

He was shot to death after attempting to pull over Andrew Mostyn Jr. in Charlotte Harbor on Sunday.

After an all-out manhunt, Mostyn was located and killed by deputies when he grabbed his rifle.

According to his Facebook page, Diaz attended Southwest Miami Senior High School in Westchester.

A spokesperson for the Charlotte County Sheriffā€™s Office said Diaz was ā€œfamous around the agency for his homemade Cuban coffeeā€ and truly loved being in law enforcement.

Diaz is survived by his wife and four children.
