Plantation fire that left doctor dead being investigated as possible arson, sources say

PLANTATION, Fla. ā€“ A Plantation house fire that left a beloved doctor dead is being investigated as a possible case of arson, sources with knowledge of the matter tell Local 10 News.

Dr. Karen Ruthman died after being pulled from the Dec. 5 fire at her home at 12350 NW 23rd Court in the Plantation Acres neighborhood.

Ruthman, who ran a family practice clinic in Weston, shared that home with her husband, fellow physician Dr. Barrington Murray, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Plantation.

Police said Murray was not home as the fire spread throughout the house. Firefighters arrived and pulled Ruthman out from the second story, sources said.

Sources said a gas can was spotted on the scene that day.

Ruthmanā€™s cause of death and toxicology results have not yet been revealed as the case pushes forward.

Friends and loved ones held a memorial for Ruthman on Friday.

Police have not said they are looking for any suspects and have described the case as a ā€œdeath investigation,ā€ rather than a criminal one, as of Monday.
