According to an arrest report, officers went to the home of Shawn Wesley Claudio, located in the 11300 block of Royal Palm Boulevard, on Saturday after mental health clinicians said they wanted to detain him under the Baker Act due to his “erratic behavior and being a threat to himself and others.”
Police said as a responding officer was speaking with the clinicians and Claudio’s father, Claudio locked himself in his bedroom. They said three other officers then arrived for backup.
The arrest report states that Claudio’s father told police that the only weapon he had was “a BB gun that looked real.”
But police said that would turn out not to be the case.
Officers brought a ballistic shield to protect themselves from BB gun rounds, the report states. Police said Claudio told them “I am ready to do what I need to do” and “if you come in, you’ll feel the wrath of God.”
Police said he eventually agreed to let an officer in to speak with him.
Prepared for BB gun rounds, police said they pressed the shield against Claudio in an attempt to detain him.
But, unbeknownst to them, Claudio had “a full-sized baseball bat in his left hand and a ‘Kama’ or ‘Kai’ karate knife in his right hand,” the report states.
The 6 to 7-inch-long knife is shaped like a sickle, police said.
Authorities said he swung both the bat and knife at the officers and an officer deployed her Taser. Police said Claudio dropped the knife after another officer took out her gun.
She received a laceration to her hand requiring stitches, authorities said. Another officer was more seriously slashed, the report states: He received three lacerations to his head and face, including one on his left eyebrow and eyelid.
Police said he required surgery at Broward Health Coral Springs.
As of Monday, Claudio was being held without bond in the Broward Main Jail.
