FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man died after police officers responded to his alleged mental health crisis on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale’s Melrose Manors neighborhood, police said.
According to Detective Ali Adamson, a spokeswoman for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the suicidal man was armed in the house at Southwest 25 Avenue and Third Street.
Adamson said relatives and neighbors had called police for help.
6 p.m. report:
“The adult male exited the home with a firearm,” Adamson said, adding he did not comply with police officers’ orders to drop it.
After the police shooting, Dwain Dudley said he was home when police officers responded and shot his 21-year-old grandson Jalen Moore.
“They shot him one time and the gun came out of his hand,” Dudley said adding, “They didn’t have to keep shooting; they kept shooting.”
According to Adamson, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel also responded and took the man wounded to the Broward Health Medical Center’s trauma center where he later died.
Adamson reported three police officers fired their service weapons. They were on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Police officers used crime scene tape to surround the front of the family’s light gray house and parked police cars to block Southwest 25 Avenue.
Moore’s blood still stained the driveway while Dudley said the shooting was excessive. There were bullet holes on the side of a parked car and Dudley said he had to change a flat tire near Moore’s blood.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the fatal police shooting.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
