PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Bert Medina, the president and chief executive officer of WPLG-TV, recently accepted The Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences prestigious 2024 Governors’ Award, recognizing excellence in broadcasting in Florida, Louisiana, Mobile, Alabama, and Puerto Rico.
Medina was born in Cuba and moved to South Florida when he was 7. The proud Florida International University graduate brought his spirit of community service to WPLG-TV, which supports annual benefits including My Future, My Choice.
FIU inducted him to the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2022. Medina’s service on the Marfan Foundation’s Board of Directors helps fund research for a genetic heart condition that he was diagnosed with in his 20s.
After 14 years with Sunbeam Television Corporation/WSVN-TV, Medina joined Univision Communications and served as senior vice president and operating manager of the TeleFutura Television Network.
In 2013, Post-Newsweek Stations appointed Medina vice president and general manager of WPLG-TV. In 2018, Medina became the president and CEO of WPLG-TV, a Berkshire-Hathaway company.
Medina’s long list of service posts also includes the Board of Directors for the Emma Bowen Foundation, the Florida Association of Broadcasters, and the Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communications.
NATAS Suncoast, which runs the Regional Emmy® Awards programs, announced the award in February and the ceremony was on Saturday night in Orlando.
