According to a police report, a woman confronted Whittenburg, 63, who accused Howard of stealing from him. Whittenburg then fled shortly before 5:45 p.m., on Nov. 20, from Northwest Seventh Avenue and 59 Street in the Liberty City neighborhood, police said.
Fire rescue personnel took Howard to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where a doctor declared him dead shortly before 6:30 p.m. Six days later, police officers found Whittenburg at 1603 NW 7 Ave., in Miami’s Little Havana.
Miami police officers with the felony apprehension team detained Whittenburg, so detectives could question him about the fatal stabbing. Whittenburg allegedly told detectives he knew “Jeff,” and denied having stabbed him. His alibi: He was at a Walgreens at 6200 NW 7 Ave.
Miami-Dade correctional officers booked Whittenburg at 7:50 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and he appeared in bond court on Wednesday. A judge denied him bond and he was facing a charge of second-degree murder with a weapon.
