Shannon Joseph Gayton was taken into custody without incident around just after 11 a.m., according to Adam Linhardt, a spokesperson with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they found Gayton outside the credit union, located at 5300 Overseas Hwy., with a bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash, which was returned to them.
Gayton reportedly entered the credit union, threw a bag at tellers, and demanded money before calmly informing them he would wait for law enforcement outside, according to Linhardt.
No injuries or weapons were reported in the incident.
“We are deeply appreciative to our local authorities and proud of the dedicated employees who acted swiftly and professionally to resolve this expeditiously,” Keys Federal Credit Union CEO Maggie Sayer said in a statement released to Local 10 News.
She also said the FBI has been notified and is assisting in the investigation.
Local 10 News has reached out to MCSO to find out Gayton’s exact charges and arraignment date after they were not listed on the county’s jail website at the time of publishing.
