MIAMI – After hearing closing arguments, jurors delivered a verdict on Monday in a Miami murder trial.
The jury ultimately decided whether they believe Courtney Britton acted in self-defense or not in a murder and attempted murder from 2021.
They did not.
Britton, 35, was found guilty of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and tampering with a witness.
6 a.m. report:
He was facing a murder charge in the death of Joshua Caraballo and attempted murder of Robert Fulton, but the jury ultimately found him guilty of the lesser charge, which carries a lower penalty of up to 30 years in prison.
Earlier this week, Britton testified he was robbed of a gold chain. After, he retrieved his gun and opened fire.
In an interview with Local 10, Britton described the moment he realized one of the thieves was armed.
”And he pushes it into my chest harder, that’s how I know it was a gun. I felt the metal.”
In closing arguments, prosecutor Johnathan Borst asked the jury if the shooting was necessary, telling the jury that it was not a justified shooting and providing another demonstration of how far he says Britton walked to get his gun.
Britton was emotional throughout court proceedings Monday, often crying and rocking back and forth.
His lawyer, Dameka Davis, told the jury Britton was in fear for his life.
Prior to deliberations, the jury was reminded that they could convict Britton of manslaughter instead of second-degree murder.
