BSO: Man burglarizes Sheriff Gregory Tony’s vehicle, steals firearm magazines, among other items

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man has been arrested after he burglarized a Broward Sheriff’s Office vehicle assigned to Sheriff Gregory Tony, the agency confirmed to Local 10 News Tuesday.

According to BSO spokesman Carey Codd, Andre Demetric Perry, 42, broke into the sheriff’s vehicle at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday while it was parked in Fort Lauderdale.

“Several items were stolen, including firearm magazines, a handcuff key, and personal items,” Codd wrote in an email to Local 10. “No firearms were stolen.”

According to the suspect’s arrest report, the burglary was captured on surveillance video inside a gated parking garage.

Authorities said Perry was seen on the video trying door handles to vehicles before entering the sheriff’s GMC Denali.

According to the report, the following items were stolen from the vehicle: three 30-round rifle magazines, two 20-round handgun magazines, one duffle bag containing pants, shirts, sneakers and Ray-Ban sunglasses, prescription medication, a fuel card and one handcuff key. The total value of the items is more than $750.

Codd said a Be on the Lookout “BOLO” was issued for the suspect and Fort Lauderdale police located and arrested Perry later in the day on unrelated charges.

Perry, who was allegedly wearing the same clothes from the burglary when he was arrested, was then linked to the vehicle burglary and is now facing charges of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and grand theft.

“Following Perry’s arrest for the vehicle burglary, several items were recovered, including the handcuff key,” Codd wrote.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Perry remained held at the Broward Main Jail.

He appeared in court Monday morning where it was revealed that Andre Perry is an alias, and Perry’s legal name is Anthony Perry.

The judge ordered that he be fitted with a GPS monitor if he posts bond and stay away from the residential area where the break-in occurred.

It was learned in court that Perry was on probation at the time of the burglary and he has a lengthy criminal history for charges of burglary, cocaine possession, domestic battery by strangulation, battery on a law enforcement officer and grand theft.

A public defender who appeared in court told the judge that Perry is not working and is currently homeless.

BSO is asking that anyone with further information about the burglary calls Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
