MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – State troopers arrested a Homestead man Sunday, just hours after they said he fled the scene of a crash in which he hit and killed a pedestrian on U.S. 1.

According to an arrest report, the crash happened just after 1:15 a.m. near Southwest 214th Street in the unincorporated Goulds area.

Authorities said another driver witnessed Jorge Arevalo Sorto, 26, swerve in a failed attempt to avoid the pedestrian, who wasn’t identified in the report, and then drive off.

Troopers said the witness gave Miami-Dade police a partial license plate number and they used data from an automated license plate reader to track down Arevalo Sorto.

The arrest report states that when a Homestead police officer arrived at his residence, Arevalo Sorto was overheard telling his mother that he had been involved in a crash and fled.

Authorities took Arevalo Sorto, a Salvadoran national, into custody on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash causing death.

As of Monday afternoon, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $25,000 bond.
