MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Lines are growing as people head to the polls ahead of the final day of early voting on Sunday.
Local measures, state amendments and the race for President drawing hundreds of thousands of South Floridians to get their vote in before Election Day on Tuesday.
Addressing concerns about Election Day, the U.S. Justice Department announced Friday it will have staff monitoring election sites, making sure federal voting laws are followed.
Nineteen-year-old Abdul Ajal is part of the youngest voting bloc, casting a ballot for President for the first time.
“I think we’re going to have a huge effect,” said Ajal.
Local 10 News spoke to FIU Political science professor Eduardo Gamarra, who pointed to a new FIU poll focusing on Latinos in swing states.
“The Hispanic vote could in fact be absolutely determinant,” said Gamarra. “Very, very significant motivation to vote.”
The poll showing 80% of Latinos that say they’re motivated to vote, and a trend towards the Republican Party, but when it comes to this presidential election, a surge towards Vice President Kamala Harris, even though the economy is their top issue.
Also, when it comes to immigration, “Mass deportation and rounding up Hispanics, 35% tell us that they would support,” said Gamarra.
