FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police in Fort Lauderdale are searching for the driver of a Jeep Wrangler who ran over and killed an elderly man early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed Thursday.
Authorities said the incident took place around 2:06 a.m. in the 100 block of Northwest First Street, where 73-year-old Esperant Lahens was found dead at the scene.
According to the FLPD, a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler had been parked in the area when Lahens lay down on the ground in front of the vehicle.
Authorities said surveillance video shows three people returning to the Jeep and the driver pulling forward, running over Lahens, who was lying near the curb. Police said investigators have not determined if the driver was aware of Lahens’ presence.
A passerby found Lahens unresponsive around 6:25 a.m. and contacted authorities. Police say the driver is not currently facing charges but they continue to seek information for the ongoing investigation.
