Police: Miami arsonist destroys 3 cars, displaces apartment building’s residents

MIAMI – A surveillance camera recorded video showing an arsonist in action Wednesday in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, police said.

The fire prompted an evacuation shortly after 2:30 a.m., of a one-story apartment building at 2021 NW 31 St., just west of Maya Angelou Elementary School.

Walter Muñoz said neighbors woke him up when they knocked on his door, yelling there was a fire. When he and his wife walked out, he saw flames engulfing his car.

4 p.m. report:

“The person that did this, when they catch him, don’t let him out because this was dangerous,” Muñoz, 82, said in Spanish adding that his car was destroyed.

The two other cars parked on each side of Muñoz’s Toyota were charred in the blaze. The flames spread into the apartment building where the cars were parked.

A part of the ceiling in an apartment facing the cars caved in after the windows blew out. Smoke billowed from the roof. Several residents were homeless.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
