BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Many South Floridians encounter stranded or suffering wildlife but often feel uncertain about how to assist the smallest creatures in need.
A woman, however, recently learned that sometimes you just have to ask for a helping hand — or two.
When Karen Pucci found a baby blue jay stranded on the sidewalk on Davie this week, she knew she had to do something to save him.
The baby bird appeared to have fallen from his nest, prompting Pucci to reach out for assistance. “And now we have the Davie Fire Department coming,” she said as firefighters arrived at the scene.
The little blue jay had fallen far from his parents and three other chicks, crying out for help. “Hi guy, we’re trying! They’re trying, they’re trying! You’ve got the town of Davie on your side!” Pucci said.
She affectionately named the baby bird Freddy and enlisted the help of her entire neighborhood for his rescue.
“It was a shaky walk up and a precarious placement of the little guy back where he belonged,” Birch said.
“Nice and easy, don’t shake that branch,” one firefighter instructed as he carefully climbed the ladder.
In a happy ending, the whole family was reunited in their nest, with Pucci and the firefighters cheering.
