Authorities ID man killed by Hollywood officer during ‘neighbor dispute’

A neighbor initially called 911 to report a dispute over a shared fence with the suspect

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Authorities identified a man Thursday who they said was killed in a police shooting that also left a responding officer injured last week in Hollywood.

Authorities identified the man as 48-year-old Juan Wu.

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 10, when Hollywood police were called to a home near North 66th Terrace and Eaton Street for a “neighbor dispute” involving a reported vandalism.

Wu’s neighbor had called 911 to report that he had damaged a shared fence.

“I’m calling because of a situation with a neighbor here,” the caller said in the 911 recording obtained by Local 10 News. “We share a fence and he (Wu) decided to mess it up. When my husband went to talk to him, he started shouting and cursing at him.”

The woman asked for help to de-escalate the argument.

While officers were investigating the situation, authorities said Wu suddenly attacked one of the officers, creating a tussle. Police said the officer attempted to use a Taser, but it was ineffective.

“Fearing for their life,” investigators said the officer fired his or her weapon, hitting Wu. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“The officer involved sustained injuries during the altercation and was treated and released from the hospital,” Hollywood Police Department spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said in a news release Thursday. The officer’s identity has not been disclosed.

A neighbor who witnessed the incident told Local 10 News that they saw Wu face down on the ground as the officer, appearing flustered, attempted CPR. The neighbor also mentioned that Wu was known in the community for having mental health struggles.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

In a statement obtained by Local 10 News last Thursday, the FDLE said, “Our investigation is limited to the officer-involved shooting. The investigation is still active, therefore no additional information will be provided.”
