Arrest made in case of dog left abandoned along I-75 ahead of Hurricane Milton hitting Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The story of Trooper, the dog that was found chained to a fence in flood waters as Hurricane Milton approached Florida, captured the hearts of many.

A Highway Patrol Trooper spotted the dog just off I-75 near Tampa and helped rescue the abandoned pup.

“I’m proud to announce that authorities have identified the dog’s former owners and State Attorney Susie Lopez is now pursuing animal cruelty charges against the individuals,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

Authorities arrested the former owner, 23-year-old Giovanny Garcia, Monday on aggravated animal cruelty charges.

He could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.

Trooper the dog is currently being cared for at a humane society in Tallahassee and will eventually be adopted.
