The Historic Downtowner closes in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After more than 30 years, one of Fort Lauderdale’s favorite places for a cocktail near the New River closed its doors on Sunday.

According to a post on Instagram, the Historic Downtowner and Maxwell Room closed on Oct. 6.

According to the restaurant’s website, the restaurant has served guests for more than 30 years at 10 S. New River Dr. E. in Fort Lauderdale. The Historic Downtowner sits on the site of the Maxwell Arcade. It was named after its developer Fred Maxwell and first opened its doors as the Maxwell Arcade in 1925.

The Maxwell Room has served as a venue for weddings, receptions, corporate gatherings, Sunday Brunch and Tuesday trivia.
