Fort Lauderdale residents stock up on sandbags, prepare homes for Milton effects

While Hurricane Milton is not heading toward South Florida, the area will still feel some effects of the storm this week, leading to long lines Tuesday for sandbags at Floyd Hull Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The Edgewood neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale -- like many others -- were hit really bad in April of 2023.

Streets were covered in water and the flood waters even took over homes.

Local 10′s Joseph Ojo met Regina Igoe and her friend in line for sandbags Tuesday.

“She was up to her waist in her house, so we are sandbagging for her house,” Igoe said.

The limit at the stadium was five sandbags per household.

“You have no control over this, and we have to do the best we can do and help each other,” Igoe said.

Igoe and her friend allowed Ojo to follow them to their homes in Riverland Village as they prepared, putting plastic on the sliding glass windows and then sandbags against it to prevent flooding.

Others we spoke with in line have been going to sandbag distribution locations each day they have been available, getting as much they can, saying it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“This one, you got to worry about it,” one man said. “Usually I work in the Tampa area -- I’m a truck driver -- my company said ‘Don’t even come out here.’”
