FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Even before feeling the effects of Hurricane Milton, Fort Lauderdale was already dealing with flooding on Sunday. Mayor Dean J. Trantalis declared a state of emergency.
Gov. Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency in over 50 counties, including Broward. Several cities set up sandbagging sites and deployed pumps.
“My emergency declaration allows city leadership to better obtain and deploy resources needed to protect life and property,” Trantalis wrote in a statement. “Heavy rain and flooding are possible and do pose an imminent threat.”
A flood watch was in effect until Thursday, with 6 to 8 inches of rain expected. Flash flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying areas and tropical-storm-force winds were set to begin late Tuesday night.
“Please remember to ensure you and your family have adequate supplies for a storm and that you are preparing to put into place your plans to secure your property,” Trantalis wrote.
