TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Zoo Miami will remain closed on Sunday, as Florida prepares for the next hurricane.

Ron Magill, the spokesman for The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, announced the closure was due to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s declaration of a state of emergency for Miami-Dade County.

“Decisions on closing for the next few days will be made on a day-to-day basis,” Magill wrote in a statement.

DeSantis announced Sunday that he had declared a state of emergency in 51 Florida counties. The list on Saturday was 32 counties, including Broward and Monroe counties.

Milton strengthened from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Sunday, and the National Hurricane Center forecasted it to become a major hurricane on Monday.

Sunday afternoon was still too soon to determine the specifics of the hurricane’s Florida landfall next week, but the Tampa Bay area was highly likely to feel the eye of the storm.
