South Floridians still recovering from home flood damage wary of heavy rain forecast

AVENTURA, Fla. – There was fear and frustration among residents of Fort Lauderdale’s Edgewood neighborhood on Friday, knowing heavy rain is in the forecast.

“Last time it was up to my hips,” said Sharon Dolan.

Dolan, like her neighbors, was forced out of her home after historic flooding in April of 2023.

6 p.m. report:

Now, she’s almost done remodeling.

“There’s nothing to do. I don’t care how many sandbags you’re going to put out there. It’s not going to work,” she said.

Israel Garcia and family lived in their camper for a year. Their home is finally fixed; they now worry about more water damage.

“Nothing we can do,” he said.

In Aventura, some residents are just starting repair work at the Biscayne Lake Gardens condo complex, after the latest deluge to soak South Florida happened in June.

“It’s been awful,” said Yana Karpova. “It’s been traumatic.”
