COOPER CITY, Fla. – A man survived and a woman has died after the vehicle they were in plowed into a canal in Cooper City Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman Carey Codd, the crash was reported at about 6 a.m. in the area of Griffin Road and Southwest 90th Avenue.
“This was a single vehicle crash where the vehicle crashed into part of a small bridge,” Codd said.
6 p.m. report:
Deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene.
Codd said a man was able to escape from the submerged vehicle, but a woman was found dead inside the car by BSO’s Dive Team.
He said the woman had been driving the car when it crashed.
One by one, family members were seen rushing to the scene after learning their loved one, 23-year-old Caitlynn Heron, had died. Some even dropped to the ground, having to be consoled by deputies.
“I lost my daughter, my little mouse,” said Frank Heron. “The feelings I can’t even bring to words. I’ll never be the same.”
The victim’s mother told Local 10 News that her daughter was a hard worker and beautiful. She said she identified her daughter by their matching tattoos.
“That was my baby girl -- that was my youngest daughter -- she had so many plans for the future,” said Blanche Pastore, the victim’s mother.
Detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit are now investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The family is holding a vigil at Geronimo’s in Davie on Friday at 5 p.m. and are asking friends and loved ones to attend.
