6-year-old killed in shooting at Tamarac condo building

TAMARAC, Fla. – A boy is dead after a shooting at a Tamarac condominium building Monday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies were sent to the Sun Vista Gardens complex in the 5600 block of Rock Island Road at around 3:30 p.m.

Initial reports were that the boy may have shot himself. Neighbors said he was 6 years old.

Neighbor Niko Louissant said, “I keep hearing it was self-inflicted, so we don’t even know how to take that to be honest.”

“On scene, deputies located a child that had been shot. The child was pronounced deceased on scene,” a BSO spokesperson said in a news release. “Detectives with BSO’s Crime Scene and Homicide Units are responding to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”

Authorities had not yet confirmed information regarding the child’s identity as of late Monday afternoon. They have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was accidental.

Video taken by a Local 10 News photojournalist showed deputies putting a distraught woman into the back of a squad car. She was not handcuffed.

It’s not yet clear whether anyone will be arrested or charged.

BSO spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis had a message to gun owners.

“Despite what the circumstances are surrounding this incident, we want to remind gun owners to make sure they secure their weapons in a a safe, secure place,” she said.
