Kids celebrate Afro-Caribbean culture at junior carnival in Broward

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A group of about a dozen kids wearing costumes with glitter, sequence, shimmer, and feathers followed Tricia Baptiste. Three were dressed as birds. A girl wore cobalt blue and silver to mimic a blue sea star. A man played Afro-Caribbean music beats.

Baptiste said they were preparing to celebrate their vibrant cultural heritage with music and dance during the Miami Broward Junior Carnival from 1 to 10 p.m., on Oct. 5, at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, at 3700 NW 11 Place, in Lauderhill.

“We have face painting,” said Baptiste, the event’s manager adding the goal is to bring “families together.”

Baptiste said the parade with masquerade bands is at 2 p.m., and the list of group performances includes the Break Awae Kru, China Mas Kids, Karnival Kidz, La Familia, Major Players, Royalty Kidz, Wassi Babes, and Zing-Zing Kidzz.

“Each band tells a story ... When they all come together, the story comes alive,” Baptiste said about the themes.

Tickets are $20 per person when purchased in advance online and parking is free. For more information about the family-friendly event or to buy tickets, visit this page.
