Trio accused of firing at police officers during chase in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ The Fort Lauderdale Police Department identified three men on Friday who stand accused of firing at police officers during a chase.

The suspects were identified as 20-year-olds Robert Lee Earl Scott and Devontay Drake Mayes, along with 23-year-old Myron Sinclair, who were all in the same car during the chase when the pursuit started along Northwest Third Avenue and ended at Northwest Ninth Avenue and Sixth Street.

Scott, 20, appeared in Broward County court Friday, where a judge denied him bond after Fort Lauderdale police said he opened fire on officers during the pursuit.

According to police, Scott exited a vehicle and fired 15 rounds at officers after they attempted to pull the car over.

The shootout rattled homes near Northwest 3rd Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard, where police initially tried to stop the suspectsā€™ car.

ā€œWhen I came outside, I saw a car speeding off and the police were here,ā€ said Fort Lauderdale David Trap.

The chase continued down Sunrise Boulevard but ended quickly when the suspectsā€™ vehicle crashed into a fence outside a business. Bystanders witnessed the chaotic scene.

ā€œI was just sitting here and I heard a big booming bang,ā€ a witness named Claudette said.

All three men now face multiple charges, including armed robbery and attempted murder. For nearby residents, the close call with gunfire has left many considering a move.

ā€œI might need a new place to live after my lease is up,ā€ said Trap.

Fortunately, no one was hit in the gunfire. Two officers involved were taken to the hospital as a precaution and are expected to be fine. Itā€™s important to note that none of the officers fired their weapons during the incident.

Broward Sheriffā€™s Office correctional deputies booked all three suspects on Thursday at the main jail in Fort Lauderdale. They appeared in Broward County bond court on Friday. Inmate records show they remained behind bars without bond for charges of armed robbery and three counts of attempted murder.

Scott, Sinclair, and Mayes were also facing charges of discharging a firearm in public; throwing a missile into a dwelling, vehicle, building, or aircraft; criminal mischief, fleeing and eluding police, resisting an officer without violence.

Sinclair, who was driving the getaway car, was also facing charges of driving with a revoked driverā€™s license and fleeing with disregard for the safety of persons or property.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
