MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – State troopers arrested a northeast Miami-Dade man on a vehicular homicide charge Thursday; they say he was driving a Tesla more than double the speed limit on Interstate 95 seconds before he slammed into a Jeep in 2023, killing one person and injuring another.

The crash happened around 3:15 a.m. on July 2, 2023 in the freeway’s northbound lanes, between Miami Gardens Drive and Ives Dairy Road.

Authorities said vehicle data showed that Michael Joseph Genao, 26, was driving a Tesla Model 3 at 132 mph about two seconds before the crash.

According to an arrest warrant, Genao, a resident of the nearby Ojus area, was attempting to change lanes when he hit the Jeep at 106 mph, ejecting its two occupants, one of whom died.

The warrant doesn’t identify the victims.

Genao, facing a charge of vehicular homicide in a reckless manner, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $100,000 bond as of late Friday morning.
