MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida International University has earned top marks when it comes to the top 50 public universities in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report Best College 2025 rankings.
FIU was the only South Florida in the top 50. The university ranked number 46 among public universities for the first time, according to the rankings.

FIU also climbed 18 spots from last year among public universities and 26 spots overall to become one of the Top 100 universities in the nation.
Other Florida schools on the list:
- University of Florida in Gainesville made the top 10 and holds the seventh spot, down from number 6, on the list for top public schools across the country.
- Florida State University in Tallahassee ranked 23.
- University of South Florida in Tampa ranked 45.
- University of Central Florida in Orlando ranked 46.
According to U.S. News and World Report, ranking is based on 17 factors. The report ranked nearly 1,500 U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree-granting institutions in several other categories including National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities and Regional Colleges.
