Savvy FedEx driver credited for thwarting crook trying to steal packages full of iPhones

Suspect posed as Hialeah homeowner — but driver wasn’t buying it

HIALEAH, Fla. – An alert FedEx driver is being credited for stopping a would-be porch pirate in Hialeah.

Ring video posted online shows the driver, while making a delivery on Friday afternoon, being approached by a man wearing a grey hoodie.

Police said the man claimed to be the homeowner and wanted to take the packages, which contained new iPhones.

But the driver, who hasn’t been publicly identified, wasn’t buying it. He asked the man to open the door to prove he lived there.

“Open the door,” the delivery driver could be heard saying.

The real homeowner, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Anthony, was watching the scene play out remotely.

“He said, ‘No, you don’t live here - and if you do live here, open the door and show me some ID and I’ll give you the phones,’” Anthony recalled.

The man was then seen driving away in a red Hyundai.

“That FedEx driver was already able to capture a picture of his car and his tag,” said Hialeah police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez. “We want to know if this man is responsible for other theft packages in the city of Hialeah.”

FedEx released a statement to Local 10 News regarding the incident, which read, in part:

“The security of our customers’ shipments is our top priority, and we appreciate our courier’s quick actions to make sure the shipment was delivered to its intended recipient. We encourage any customer who believes a shipment has been stolen to immediately contact local law enforcement.”

Police are investigating and asking anyone with information to give them a call.
