Man accused of running over ex-girlfriend in Pompano Beach denied bond

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man accused of running over his ex-girlfriend in Pompano Beach, killing her, appeared in court Monday where he was denied bail.

Edwin Amaya stood silent in the courtroom as the judge denied him bond for a charge of premeditated murder.

Amaya is accused of running over his ex-girlfriend and mother of his son, Brenda Hernandez, two times on Saturday night.

The killing was captured on camera.

In addition to the son she shared with the suspect, Hernandez, 29, is also the mother of two other children.

Her mother said her daughter never bothered anyone and that Amaya had been abusive.

The father of Brenda Amaya’s two older children, Omar Munguia Henrique, told Local 10 News that the suspect showed up Saturday, belligerent and drunk, and threatened to shoot everyone before running over the victim.

Detectives believe Amaya, 32, was driving a white Ford F-250 pickup truck when he intentionally struck the victim twice near South Cypress Road and Southwest Eighth Street.

Munguia Henrique said he too was dragged by the suspect’s truck in Pompano Beach.

The family had just returned from a dinner when he showed up.

Munguia Henrique said the victim was ran over in front of her younger children.

Police said Amaya took off but was detained a short time later just off Dixie Highway.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Hernandez’s family bring her body back to Honduras.
