Family members shocked, saddened following shooting death of teen in Wilton Manors

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after two teenagers playing with guns Monday afternoon led to a tragic situation.

One of them was shot and killed and the other is now behind bars.

The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Christopher Granados.

In newly released 911 calls, a frantic caller was desperate for help after Granados was shot.

The caller said the shooter and the victim were playing with guns when one of them went off.

Noon report:

Jose Granados, father of the victim, shared his disbelief over his son’s death with Local 10′s Roy Ramos on Wednesday.

“How am I going to feel? I don’t have my son,” he said.

Jose Granados told Local 10 News that four teens including his son were inside the apartment when the incident occurred and two guns were present when one accidentally went off.

“If he was the owner of the gun and it was his son, he should face charges,” Jose Granados added, insisting that the father of the suspect, if responsible for the weapon, should also be held accountable.

The victim’s aunt, Gloria Granados, also spoke to Local 10 News on Tuesday, saying in Spanish that she was heartbroken and wanted justice.

She said Christopher attended Fort Lauderdale High School and was a happy kid who was close to his family.

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives, who investigate deaths in Wilton Manors, said Granados was in an apartment along the 400 block of Northwest 25th Street when he was shot.

Detectives said they spoke to teenage witnesses who were inside the home at the time of the shooting and said that another teen, identified as 16-year-old Herbe Belony, was with Granados playing with guns when one discharged.

Granados was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Belony was arrested Monday night and is facing a charge of manslaughter with a firearm.

“It is just crazy. It could’ve been anyone,” said Connor Melachrino, a student at Fort Lauderdale High School, where both the victim and Belony attended classes.

Days after the fatal shooting, the school was somber as students learned that one of their peers had lost his life.

“A bunch of my friends and I went to middle school with him, so everyone knew of him,” Melachrino added.

“When I get home, I still think my son is going to be there. I’m heartbroken because he was always with me,” said Jose Granados.

“I feel, very, very, very, very deeply depressed and very bad for me and for another family,” he added. “I send my condolences.”

Belony will be held at the juvenile detention center for at least 21 days. His next court appearance is on Oct. 4.

Authorities are still investigating how Belony obtained the gun and confirmed there are no pending charges for any adults.
