Cubans frustrated, struggling as food shortage continues

MIAMI – A stricter rationing of bread is happening in Cuba where an ongoing food shortage continues.

The Cuban government has lessened the ration of daily bread from 80 grams to 60 grams.

One man who lives there spoke to Local 10 News, saying the government blames the United States’ embargo, but added that he knows it’s all lies.

Orlando Gutierrez, with the Assembly of Cuban Resistance, told Local 10 News’ Annaliese Garcia that the food crisis is man-made.

“The regime needs to import almost everything Cubans eat, because their policies have ruined the Cuban soil and have taken away any kind of incentive for farmers,” said Gutierrez.

Ivia Perez Naranjo, who left Cuba to Nicaragua in November of last year, coming to Miami soon after, said people on the island “survive in terms of food because of the food their families send from outside Cuba.”

“People in Miami have several jobs to feed their families in Cuba on a weekly basis,” she said.

Gutierrez said the regime refuses to make changes to its policies, so the food crisis is only getting worse.

“By the government’s policies of collectivizing the land, regulating farmers, they can’t produce anymore,” he said.
