Man accused of DUI in Florida Keys crash that hurt 3, 1 seriously

William Thetford (MCSO)

STOCK ISLAND, Fla. – A man is facing a felony charge after authorities said he was driving drunk when he crashed into two vehicles at an intersection near his home on Stock Island over the weekend, sending one victim to a Miami-Dade trauma center and injuring two others.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies said William Ashley Thetford, 29, was driving his Toyota truck north on U.S. 1 when he hit the two cars as they turned onto the Overseas Highway from MacDonald Avenue at around 4 a.m. Sunday.

A 37-year-old man in one of the vehicles “sustained significant head injuries” and had to be airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, an arrest report states.

Two women suffered minor injuries. Thetford was taken to the nearby Lower Keys Medical Center and declined treatment.

Deputies said when they interviewed Thetford at the hospital, they noticed signs of intoxication and performed a field sobriety test in the hospital’s parking lot, which he failed.

Breathalyzer results from about two-and-a-half hours after the crash showed Thetford had a blood-alcohol content of .09%, just over the legal limit.

As of Monday, Thetford remained held without bond on a felony charge of DUI causing serious bodily injury and two misdemeanor DUI charges.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 4.
