Caught on camera: Thief takes off with SUV as victim is pumping air into tire in Broward

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office is searching for a car thief they say targeted a victim last month as he was pumping air into one of the tires of his vehicle.

According to a BSO news release, the theft occurred around 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at an apartment complex located at 8000 Hampton Blvd. in North Lauderdale.

“The preliminary investigation revealed an adult male was pumping air into the right rear passenger tire of his 2020 black Chevy Equinox, when an unknown adult male walked over to him and asked him if he was putting air into his tire,” BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman wrote in the news release. “The victim replied ‘yes’ and then continued to monitor the air pressure. Once he finished putting air in the tire, the victim said he heard a door open and close. When he looked up, he noticed the subject he was just speaking with was in the driver’s seat of his vehicle and driving away.”

Surveillance video released Monday shows the car thief interacting with the victim before leaving the area in the victim’s SUV.

He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with red letters and red and black shorts at the time.

Anyone who recognizes the car thief is asked to call BSO North Lauderdale District Detective Lisa Sokol at 954-720-2261 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), or submit a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
